Setting a staff member's pay and commission
How to set salary, commission or both on a staff profile, fill in Pay to be set, give one service its own commission rate, and who can see pay.
Each staff member has a pay package: how they are paid and at what rate. StyleDesk uses the commission rate to work out commission on every bill they are credited with. This guide covers where to set it; for choosing a pay model and rates, read how to calculate stylist commission.
Who can see and set pay
Pay is the owner's job. On a staff profile, only owners see the Base Salary and Commission cards and the commission rate on each service. When a manager adds someone, the Add staff wizard skips the pay part and says Pay is set by the owner after the profile is created.
The three pay models
- Salary Only: a fixed salary, no commission.
- Commission Only: a percentage of what they bring in, no fixed salary.
- Salary + Commission: both.
When you add someone
In the Add staff wizard, the Role & pay step has a Pay section for owners:
- Pick Salary Only, Commission Only or Salary + Commission.
- Type the Fixed salary and choose how often it is paid: Daily, Weekly, Bi-weekly or Monthly.
- Type the Commission %.
- Optionally set Effective from. Left empty, it uses their start date.
Not decided yet? Tick Set pay later. See adding staff for the rest of the wizard.
"Pay to be set"
A staff member gets a "Pay to be set" package when a manager adds them, when an owner ticks Set pay later, or when they come in from an Excel import without pay columns. On their profile this shows as a Base Salary of 0.00 with Salary Only and no commission. No commission is worked out for them until you fill it in.
Set or change pay on a profile
- Open the staff member on Staff and click Edit Profile.
- Under Compensation Details, choose the Compensation Structure.
- Fill in Fixed Salary, Commission (%) or both, depending on the structure. Each amount you need must be more than zero, and commission can be at most 100%.
- Click Save Profile.
A change starts a new pay package from today. The old one is kept on record rather than overwritten, and the salary period you chose when adding them stays the same.
A different rate for one service
Some salons pay a higher rate on bridal work or a lower one on quick services. You can override the rate per service:
- On the profile, choose the Services tab.
- Click the edit icon on the service's card. The Edit Capability window opens.
- Type a Commission Override %. Leave it empty to use the person's normal rate.
- The same window has a Custom Price if this person charges differently for the service. Leave it empty to use the menu price.
- Click Save.
Owners see Commission: with the rate in use on each service card.
When a new rate takes effect
Commission is worked out on each bill line when the bill is finalised, and the rate used is saved with that line. A new rate applies to bills from then on; bills already paid keep the commission they were paid at.
