How to reduce no-shows at your salon
Practical ways to cut missed appointments: confirmations, deposits for long services, easy rescheduling, online booking and tracking who does not turn up.
Every missed appointment is a stylist sitting idle in time you could have sold. You will never get no-shows to zero, but most salons can cut them sharply with a few habits.
1. Confirm every booking in writing
A booking made over the phone is easy to forget. Send a short confirmation on WhatsApp or SMS straight away, with the date, time, service and stylist. Clients who have a message in front of them turn up more often.
2. Remind the day before
A reminder the evening before is the single most effective step. Keep it short and give the client an easy way to move the booking, so they reschedule instead of simply not coming.
3. Take a deposit for long or expensive services
Bridal makeup, keratin and colour block hours of a senior stylist's day. A deposit, even a small one, turns a casual booking into a commitment. Tell the client the policy when they book, not after they miss.
4. Make rescheduling easy
Many no-shows are clients who could not be bothered to call and cancel. If moving a booking takes one message, they will move it, and you can offer the slot to someone else.
5. Let clients book online
Clients who choose their own time pick a time that suits them, and they are more likely to keep it. An online booking page also takes bookings while you are closed.
6. Track who does not turn up
Keep a record of no-shows per client. Most of the problem usually comes from a small group of clients. For them, ask for a deposit next time or keep them to walk-in slots.
